Registration is open for Don Gorvett’s week-long summer workshops on reduction woodcut. The workshop is for adults seventeen or older. We offer two courses in July and one in August at The Don Gorvett Studio and Gallery at the Beacon Marine Basin, overlooking Gloucester Harbor.
The workshop will cover block design, tool & press usage, and relief printing techniques as practiced by Don Gorvett. We will also discuss color theory as an integral part of the process. Art history, woodcut printing in the twentieth century, and selections from Don’s classical music collection will be part of the conversation throughout the courses. The goal is for participants to understand the intricacies of relief block printing and create an edition of ten prints.
Workshops are limited to six participants, and we welcome all skill levels. We supply the woodblock, oil-based relief ink, some paper, and studio carving tools. Please bring a sketchbook for drawing and note-taking, drawing implements, and paper towels for clean-up. If you have carving tools, please bring them. We have studio carving tools available during the workshop, and new carving tool sets are available for purchase.
Workshop dates are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, July 8 -12; July 22 – 26; and August 12 – 16. The fee is $545—a deposit of $100 to hold your spot. Please send a check to Don Gorvett Gallery, 123 Market St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or call 603-436-7278 for questions and/or cc transaction.
