L Ja Hkam is a Brooklyn based artist from Burma whose practice includes printmaking, painting, and graphic design. After the pandemic, she began studying printmaking at the Art Students League of New York. She explored relief printing, silkscreen, bookbinding, and developed a love for traditional etching. Through aquatint and line etching experimentation and mistakes refine her craft. She incorporates color to express her perspective. Her prints feature figures and nature evoking texture. She has exhibited in ASL Annual Student Salons and the 14th Biennial Miniature Print Exhibition (2023) and received the 2023 Kuniyoshi Grant.

My practice is rooted in printmaking as a process of observation, patience, and transformation. Through etching, relief, and experimental techniques, I explore how layered marks can hold memory, emotion, and narrative. Figures and natural forms often appear in my work, reflecting shared human experiences and the quiet connections between people and their environments. I am drawn to the discipline and unpredictability of printmaking, where mistakes become part of the final image. By incorporating color and texture, I aim to create space for empathy, inviting viewers to slow down, look closely, and find their own reflections within the work.
