I grew up in the deep south during the 1950s and 60s, where expectations for women to achieve a position other than domestic caregiver was highly unusual, and often frowned upon. I consider myself a visual storyteller who uses symbols, memories and current events looking through the eyes of all the women in my family. Because of my love for drawing I work mainly in stone lithography for the aesthetic of the line quality I get with lithographic crayon on stone. I appreciate the contradictions inherent in the form: fine art, repeated images that are subtly unique.
Born in 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee, Kathryn Polk studied art at the Memphis Academy of Art and Memphis State University. Major influences on her art have been the Chicago’s “Hairy Who”, Ivan Albright and R.B Kitaj. In 2002, she began working with traditional stone lithography. Her lithographs can be found in permanent print collections throughout the world in China, New Zealand, South Korea, Wales, France and Argentina as well as the United States. She is currently co-owner of L VIS Press, a lithography print studio dedicated to the development and research of stone lithography.
